“A Fortune” is about a young man, who has been a thief, the most of his life. One Sunday, he sees a man with his son, but is more concerned about the expensive wallet in the mans pocket. After stealing the Wallet, the main character returns to the spot to dump the wallet. Here, he finds the man’s son all on his own. The narrator decides to takes the boy home with him. They both stay at his apartment, until the next morning. He drives the boy home and dumps the wallet in the garbage on his way home.

The story is written in a first person narrator and is told from the nameless main character point of view. He is the result of an unfortunate upbringing, and who, already as a young child was forced into theft. The one responsible for this was the main characters father, who walked out on them, when the main character was still young: “One day Pop will show up again. I’ll hand him the boxful of money, he will throw me some bills, and then I’ll just stow them away without counting them. That what I think.” This shows that our main character still looks for his father’s approval in the form of picking pockets, hoping that his father will return one day.
