The theme in this short story is about helping your fellow being and how this can affect you for the rest of your life.
The stories main character is Lindiwe. She is a woman with plenty of grit. She is not afraid to walk alone, even though she often is followed by a strange man. The reason that she is not scared has to do with where she grew up, as the text describe it: “It was no more dangerous than the slums of her native Johannesburg, in which she had grown up” (p. 1 l. 4).
She has a temper that shows after she had asked the man that follows her, what he wants. She slams the door and gets irritated by the whole situation. (p. 1 l. 28)
The man there follows Lindiwe turns out to be an old missionary named John Fortune. As the text describe him: “But this man who followed her, he did not belong here, above ground or below, neither tourist nor denizen. He was too shabbily dressed for one and too long in the tooth for the other; no one on the street lived long enough to grow that old.” (p. 1 l. 16), so it is as this man doesn’t really belong in this part of town.
