History: The first inhabitants of Australia were the Aborigines. They have travelled from Asia to Australia. In 1851, gold was discovered in Australia. Many settlers were criminals sent to live in Australia as punishment. Canberra was chosen as the capital of Australia as they could not decide between Sydney and Melbourne. Between 1851 and 1852, goldfields were discovered in Victoria and New South Wales. This discovery attracted thousands of people that came to Australia to try their luck at finding gold.

In 2006 almost one quarter of the population was born overseas, with migrants coming from over 200 countries.
