Australia is a very big country. When you see it on a map, it doesn’t look very big, but if you ‘stretched’ Australia out, it would actually be the 6’th biggest country, in the hole world, and three times as big, as India. It is 7.682.300 square kilometres, and 167 times as big, as Denmark. In Australia there live about 19,5 millions of people. Most people live in Canberra, the capital in Australia. There live about 300.000 people.
Many years ago there lived tons of humans In Australia. Actually there lived over 250.000 people. They were called aboriginals, and they all lived in big groups. At that time, there were over three hundred groups. Each group had there own language, and part of the country. They were a kind of nomads. They travelled around in there country to find food and water. They ate all sorts of plants, animals and fruit. They didn’t have a kind of religion. The only thing, they all believed in, was a time called ‘Dreamtime’. It was the time, were all the humans, plants, and animals created the world together.
In 1788, the British ‘discovered’ Australia. They took the aborigines land, and let them live in the desserts. It became very difficult for the aborigines to get a job, and send there children to school. The British didn’t want them in there country. Many aborigines died from fighting the British. There were also some, who died of diseases. In 1876 there were no aborigines left on Tasmania.
