CCW=Carry Concealed Weapon
There are 4 types of laws in the country.
May Issue:
States with “May Issue” requires a license in order to carry a concealed gun. The Local authorities (police) “may” issuance a license of the citizen if the person meets certain criteria. If a citizen meets the certain criteria, the authorities MAY issue a permit, usually based on the citizen’s reason for wanting to carry a concealed weapon. So before the citizen can get the concealed carry license officially, they have to get an acceptance by the Local authorities. That’s why it’s the “may”-issue. They can meet the requirements for the criteria’s, but the Local authorities still has the last vote.
Shall Issue:
States with “Shall Issue”, much like “may issue” states, requires a license in order to carry a concealed gun. If a citizen meets the criteria, he/she will be issued a license. The criteria normally consist of age requirement, fingerprints for background check, no record of mental illness, proof or certification from an acceptable handgun safety class and submitting the required application fee. The details of the requirements can differ from state to state. Georgia, Pennsylvania and Washington do not require any certificate of firearm training. So if you meet the requirements for the criteria’s, the state has to give you a license.
