The use of guns in the US, is something rather “common”, and an increasing amount of people want to be allowed to walk around with concealed guns for their own safety. In this text by Bob Herbert we see some examples, and it’s rather easy to understand that Bob Herbert himself isn’t very much in favour of this idea.
The most obvious statement made in the text, is when he tells about Eric Thompson, owner of an online firearms store, who thinks that every student at Virginia Tech should be allowed to carry around concealed firearms, despite the fact, that one of the guns he had sold had been used to kill 32 students and faculty members of the school the previous year. He had also sold a gun to a student in another school, which the student used to kill 5 people and wounded another 18 people, and then committed suicide. The authors response to this kind of ideas is: “… too stupid for words.” Imagining a bunch of students all carrying guns is rather terrifying, and one wouldn’t feel any safe with a gun, if all the surrounding students were carrying one as well.
The harm it can do is also proved when the state legislators in Florida considered letting students with permits to carry guns on campus, and a student showing of his gun accidentally killed another student and shot another one in the wrist. To this the author then writes: “The National Rifle Association thinks that’s a dandy idea.” One cannot imagine the word “dandy” being used by The National Rifle Association, they might be in favour of the idea, but not to the extent that “dandy” is their way of describing it, so it’s probably the authors way of once again trying to show how stupid it is, by being sarcastic.
