Theme – Colonization in India, power, oppressors vs. the oppressed, irony of oppression
Personal essay –George Orwell while subdivision police officer in Burma, colonized India.
Gets called for help – elephant gone savage – when arrived elephant is calm – does not want to shoot – gets pressured by the crowd of 2000 people –can’t bear to watch it die
Because this is a personal essay (genre) I prefer to mix the composition and characterization. It makes sense because these two are relevant for each other as Orwell tells/writes the story about him-self.
Begins in medias res – the speaker is George Orwell since it is personal essay
Lays out a down to earth overview over the situation – about himself (doen’t take himself too seriously) about his task of handling the elephant:
“The only time in my life that I have been important enough for this to happen to me.”
His meaning is clear – his inner opinion, his outer actions, his actual plans, his conscience (no need to look for hidden agenda) Concrete language – language of openness
Story mainly chronological shaped of long sentences -- we get opinion on the subject with short look back (after the football game, people spitting and the uncomfortable look of the Buddhist priests)
