“Sorry for the loss” is a short story written by Bridget Keehan in 2008. The story is about Evie who is going to tell Victor that his Nan has died. Evie is working for ETS – Enhanced Thinking Skills and Victor is imprisoned. When Victor receives the bad news he responds with a question “Why should a dog, a horse, a pigeon have life and Nan no breath at all?”(Page 4, line 101-102) He isn’t showing any emotions concerning the news he was given – the quote is not even his own words. Evie wonders why! Why isn’t he sad?
The short story is written in a third person narrator with an insight in Evie’s thoughts. This makes the short story more personalized as we get to know the main character’s thoughts and feelings. Evie is religious. She believes in baby Jesus like a true Catholic. That is why Evie is a chaplain. As a chaplain, she believes in salvation through prayers, which is why she offers to pray for Victor and his Nan. His Nan is death and may not be able to find the way to heaven on her own, but Victor is alive and imprisoned – he obviously did something terrible.
