“Indian Camp” was written by Ernest Hemingway in the early 1920s. The story is about Nick, his father (Dr. Adams), and his uncle George. Nick's father is a doctor and wants to show Nick the 'real' world and how other people live their lives. At the lakeshore, some Indians come up to them and ask Nick's father, to help an Indian woman give birth. She has been in labor for the last two days. They agree and soon row off with the Indians. When they arrive, the pregnant woman is screaming. Nick isn’t comfortable with the situation. He asks his dad to give her anesthetic, but he doesn’t have any. The Indians guide them over to the shanty, where the woman is. Nick's father begins to perform a Caesarean operation on the woman with a jack-knife. He uses tapered gut leaders to sew it up. The father to the baby lays in the upper bunk in pain due to his foot. During the operation, Nick's father removes the placenta and puts it in a basin. After Nick's father has successfully delivered the baby, the father couldn’t hold the pressure of becoming a dad and commits suicide. There is an elated mood when they row home. Nick sits in the stern, while his father rows. His father apologizes to Nick for bringing him along.
