A young man, Krebs, went to war in 1917 from a Methodist college in Kansas. Krebs came back to the United States in 1919, a while after the other soldiers. When Krebs came back to his home town Oklahoma, no one was greeting him; everybody thought it was strange that he came home so late. It suited Krebs well, because at first he did not want to talk about the war, but after a while he felt the need to talk, but no one wanted to listen. So Krebs lied to get attention.

Krebs is not interested in any of the town girls, because he thinks they are too complicated, he will rather have a German or French girl, they are easier going.

Krebs’ mother and father thinks he should find a job and a girlfriend, so they give Krebs permission to borrow the car, which he was not allowed to before he was in war. But all Krebs wants to do is reading about the war, he does not have the lust to find a job.

Krebs and his mother discussed Krebs’ future, and Krebs ends up saying that he does not love his mother, but after seeing her reaction, he takes it back. Krebs’ mother asks him to pray with him, but Krebs does not want to, so his mother prays for him alone. Krebs agrees with himself that he would go to Kansas City and get a job.
