Apartheid was a system of racial separation. Apartheid means that you keep things separate, but in this situation we are talking about racial separation between the black and white people. Inhabitants was classified into four racial groups - "black", "white", "coloured" and "indian". From 1960 to 1983, 3.5 million non-white South Africans were removed from there homes, and forced into segregated neighbourhoods, in one of the largest mass removals in modern history. The government segregated education, medical care, beaches, and other public services between blacks and whites. The whites were always first in line to sit in buses, on benches etc. (105 ord ) In 1990 President Frederik Willem de Klerk began negosiations to end apartheid. The official abolition of apartheid took place in 1991 with repeal of the last of the remaining apartheid laws, nonwhites was not allowed to vote until 1993 and the end of apartheid is very regarded as arising from the 1994 democratic general election.
