CCTV overvågning: invasion af privatliv og kriminalitetsforebyggelse

I have been instructed to write this letter to offer my opinion about CCTV surveillance.

I know that about four million cameras are located in Britain, and that is about a camera for every 14th person. That makes Britain one of the most heavily watched places on earth. Why though? Opinions upon CCTV is largely centered around two main issues: invasion of privacy and crime prevention. While many people admit to feeling safer in areas with CCTV, a significant proportion of these people also express concern at the idea of having CCTV near their residence. Of course, there are criminals in Britain, as there are everywhere, and the cameras are undoubtedly a big help in catching criminals responsible of crimes and whatnot. I know that crime around the world is rising year by year, but is it really necessary to watch over every person, well behaving or not?

I must say that I feel quite uncomfortable knowing that I cannot walk around the streets, minding my own business without being monitored and having my invaluable privacy invaded. However, I am not saying that I am against security surveillance. I do understand shop owners who fear being robbed without ever finding the person responsible. What I do not understand is the quantity of security cameras and surveillance.
