In the 21st century it is practically impossible to get a good job without an education. Doctors need to study at medical school, lawyers need to go to law school and singers need to mayor music. Yet there are a lot of young adults dropping out of school, skipping classes, or have trouble taking school serious in general. How can one make the adolescents understand the importance of hard work in school and a good education? That is exactly what the President of the United States tried to make them do in 2009, the 8th September at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. He delivered a speech in connection to the start of a new school year.
The speech is encouraging American students to stay in school, work hard and take responsibility for their own education. But it is not just like a grown up trying to teach a student something about life. Obama is putting himself at eye level with the students by addressing his words to the students. Like his opening “"Hello everyone - how's everybody doing today?"(L 1.) It makes the students listen and pay attention to Obama because he is talking directly to them. He also gives some stories from his own life, so he uses ethos appeal, because he as went through the same as the students. This makes it easier to believe that he knows what he is talking about and it makes it more relatable, which is important when you are talking to young people. Also because Obama is a quit famous man and a stranger to them, but by talking about his own life, he creates a bond of knowledge between them.
