Parenting styles: strict vs. relaxed upbringing

1. The first text Why I love my Chinese mom is a comment written by Sophia Chua-Rubenfeld. Sophia Chua-Rubenfeld’s mother has been criticized by the way she is raising her children, but her daughter doesn’t agree with the criticize of her mother’s child raising principles. Sophia Chua-Rubenfeld’s parents believe in strict parenting, which means that the children have to keep strictly to the rules their parents are making. She is not allowed to watch TV, be in a school play or attend a sleepover, but she have to get good grades and play the piano or violin. These are just some of the examples of how Sophia Chua-Rubenfeld’s childhood had been. The reason why her parents have chosen this way of parenting is to teach their children to work as hard as possible. “…Sophia and Louisa, were never allowed to …get any grade less than an A; not be the No. 1 student in every subject except gym and drama…”(Text 1, lines 5 and 8-9)In the second text Let them eat pizza: parenting guru’s recipe for bringing op children written by Kate Loveys she says that parents should be more relaxed about child raising, which means that she thinks that parents should be less controlling and allow their children to do what they want. ”Don't force them to do a million activities they hate.”(Text 2, lines 17.18). She claims that the relaxed upbringing will have a positive impact on the children. The third text Summerhill’s General Policy Statement which is written by a spokesman of the Summerhill School shares the same opinion as the second text. According to the text it is really important to the children to play. “But learning should come after play.”(Text 3, line 1). Because of that the parents should not have too high expectations when it comes to their children’s learning. This will make the children if their own opinions are been more emphasized. This kind of parenting will take some pressure from the parents, because they doesn’t have to try so hard all the time.
