Backpackers hit the tourist trail is an article, written by Sarah Hall back in 1999, about how the modern backpackers are starting to act more like tourist than actual old-fashioned backpackers. She expresses her opinion about the progress and changes in the backpacking culture. From the old days when young travelers would go find themselves, save the planet or discover the world. Now they live in little tourist bubbles, eating junk food, ‘’smoke dope’’ and sleep around in special ghettos made for comfort. Calling themselves backpackers, but according to Sarah they do not understand the effort of being real old-fashioned backpackers.
She entitled the modern backpackers with the well-known rule of three ‘’sex, drugs and rock n’ roll’’. She claims that all they are concerned off is doing drugs; eat bad food instead of local food and sleeping around well-established hotels. Instead of spending their time discovering cultures and living in the nature. Afterwards referring to the movie called ‘’the Beach’’ featuring Leonardo di Caprio. About a man who desires to find new cultures and as Sarah writes, ‘’…spurred-on by a desire to explore new cultures, "find themselves", or even save the world.’’ She compares the movie to how backpackers used to be and compares it to Alex Garland (Leonardo di Caprio) desire to find unknown culture and nature.
