The short story is about two sisters with a very tense relationship. They live with their single mother. The two girls have a lot of trouble getting a long with each other. And on their mother’s 40th birthday the relationship between the girls finally breaks, because Flora has stolen and ruined Rachel’s dress. In the end Rachel decides to live with their father, because she is unable to live with her sister anymore. And the mother chooses to kick Flora out of the house too.

The mother of the girls is a forty-year-old woman, who works as a bereavement counselor. She is divorced, and is now living alone with her two girls. We know that the mother is divorced and a single mother because she is not living with the girls’ father, and the father is not dead either. There are a lot of problems going on in the family mainly because the girls find it difficult to get a long with each other, and the mother is not dealing with the problems or making an effort to solve them. Instead the mom just wants the girls to behave nice on her birthday, so she can forget the problems and feel loved. Despite the fact that the mother is working with helping other people with their problems, she still doesn’t really want to help her daughters. Text says, ""Flora!" whispered the mother, who wanted life to be calm, a flat sea with no sudden breezes. She liked emotions to be explored in safe rooms, with a clock.”(p. 3, ll. 104-105) The mother spends all day working with other people’s problems, and when she gets home she doesn’t want to deal with more troubles, not even her own daughters’, she just wants other people to focus on her and make her feel loved. The mother doesn’t pay a lot of attention to her children, and she doesn’t really want to listen to them.
