The dress by Julia Darling is a short story about jealousy between to sisters. The main storyline is the relationship between two sisters. Rachel and Flora relationship are really tense and therefore turns out to break in the end.
In the beginning we find them eating at a classy restaurant. Suddenly they start arguing over a dress. Rachel accuses Flora of having stolen her dress. All this happens during their mothers fortieth birthday, which they celebrate at the restaurant. Flora denies she stole and totally ruined Rachel’s dress. She tries changing the subject. But after returning to the apartment Flora tells the truth after all. As a result of this Rachel decides to live at her fathers place, because she just can’t stand Flora anymore. Subsequently the mother kicks Flora out of the house.
The mother is forty and a bereavement counsellor. She lives with her two daughters. We know that she is divorced from the girl’s father since he doesn’t live with them anymore, but he isn’t dead either. Despite the mother’s profession is helping people deal with their problems, she’s unable to solve Rachel and Flora’s conflict. "Flora!” whispered the mother, who wanted life to be calm, a flat sea with no sudden breezes. She liked emotions to be explored in safe rooms, with a clock." (Page. 3) This means she doesn’t want to deal with any more internal family troubles, not even her own daughters, whom she feels should at least pretend to get along when it’s her birthday. She though tries solving the conflict but with no result because Flora is changing the subject in every of her attempts.
