Everybody want other people to have success, but at the same time, we all put our self first in the end. If other people have something we want, we get jealous and are willing to do horrible things in order for us to succeed. That is the main theme Julia Darling is dealing with in her short story “The dress” written in 2006. The text is about the two sisters Rachel and Flora and their never-ending fight for attention from the mother who is empty from energy to handle the problems at home because of her job.
The mother is forty years old and have two daughters. She is tired of her job, and does not have the energy to handle her daughter’s fights after a long day at work. That becomes clear when Rachel finds out that Flora has stolen her dress:
“… and Rachel knew that she would have to be pleasant, to forget about her stolen dress, wear something else, and smile” “… for a moment Rachel imagined her sitting opposite a distraught client in a cream-colored room, pushing a box of pink tissues across a coffee table”.
She work as a bereavement counsellor, which can be a mentally hard job. She needs to distance herself from the job, when she is at home. Her job has made her tired of listening to suffering people with problems. Therefore, she cannot handle the conflicts between the two sisters, and tend to take Rachel’s sides because she is the most attentive of her daughters. On the other hand, Flora is much harder to handle, and because of the mother focusing so much on her job, there is not time to deal with the two sisters problems.
