They were the first settlers- the native Australian. Walked through shallow water 50.000 years ago- the continents were closer. The Aborigines were treated as second class citizens by the white Australians (the English colonists)
-The children were taken from their parents to become 'white'
-They didn't have the right to vote until 1967. (this is very late in the history of democracy)
-The first Europeans to arrive in Australia were criminals. Because captain James Cook had discovered Australia in 1770 the English decided to send criminals by ship in 1788. This was due to the fact that English prisons were crowded. Great poverty at that time forced many poor people to steal and ….. this filled up the prisons etc.. Until then convicts had been sent to the USA but because of US independence in 1776. England had to find a new destination for the 'extra' convicts. More than 160.000 convicts came to Australia altogether.
