Similarities between the history of Aborigines, Native Americans and Hawaiians

The Europeans arrived/ 'discovered' (Columbus and Captain James Cook) these lands and suppressed the native people.

The native children were sent to either boarding schools or 'white' foster homes in order to learn to become 'white' citizens. That is, they were expected to learn to speak English, appreciate English culture and values and forget/oppress their own religious and cultural background.

The Europeans brought bacteria/diseases with them that killed many natives.

They took the land, resources and started governing with their own rules.

The Australian government apologized to the Aborigines in 2008. These words helped heal a hurt minority. May 26: National sorry day

Children from Green were taken from their families in 1950's in order to learn Danish and Danish culture by living with Danish families in Denmark. They result was that they forgot their mother tongue and could not communicate with their families. They felt like strangers

Different Identities

Group 1: They have been assimilated into the culture of the majority. Their lifestyle is westernized; they care well educated, talk, act, dress, think, eat, live as 'Europeans'/ white people. They deny their cultural background

Group 2: They have isolated themselves from western society. They live like their forefathers (ancestors) and take pride in their cultural background.
