The riots in the UK in August 2011 made the headlines over the world. Therefore several opinions sprouted up on, what the actual reason for the riots were. In his article, Al Pessin describes how the law enforcement has been authorised to use greater means in the fight against the looters, rioters and vandals. Al Pessin describes how the riots started, as a result of a shooting in a poor neighbourhood in North London. Londoners however, believe it came as a result of the large unemployment and the cuts in public services by the new government, that has caused the riots, seeing as the majority of the rioters and vandals are from the poorer parts of London. Others believe it is a problem with boredom or as a part of a chain reaction, when others start looting and vandalising. Prime minister David Cameron is convinced that the riots stem from bad parenting, lack of responsibility and respect.
Camila Batmanghelidjh firmly believes that the riots are caused by a lack of commitment to the community. Batmanghelidjh believes, that the young people feel the need to vandalise and loot to survive, seeing as they do not feel like they’re a part of the community. The young people are living in a “dog eating dog” situation, where the only way to achieve success is by stealing or selling drugs. This is caused by the poor help, that the social care agencies in the UK provide the youngsters. The poor are described as dysfunctional, because of the way their society survives by stealing and selling drugs. The young and intelligent people of the poorer parts seek explanations as to why they are treated with such inequality, compared to the other Brits.
