When Henry the eighth turned england into a protestant country most Irish people remained catholic.The following english monarchs sent soldiers to Ireland to make them protestant as well. The landowners in the northern part of ireland fled their land and left it to the english king. In 1609 scottish and English settlers, known as planters, moved to northern ireland. The land they moved to where confiscated land from the native irish people. The settlers were protestants and because of the different ideology it resulted in a war between the native catholics and the protestants. It was leading to two bloody wars, known as the irish confederate war and the williamite war, both with the same result, the settlers won.

In 1920s, ireland was divided in two parts. Northern ireland mostly protestants, stayed a part of the UK. the rest of the ireland, mostly catholics became the Irish free state.
The catholics there were living in northern ireland had no easy life. they didn’t have the same rights and opportunities, that the protestants had. They were discriminated, they barely found jobs, got less money from the government and were often harassed by the police. In the late 1960s riots broke out between protestants and catholics in belfast and londonderry. the violent decades that followed became knowns as the troubles.
