Oktoberfest is a very famous festival, also called Wiesn and originates from Germany. It is the world’s largest folk festival with more than 6 million people from around the world attending the event every year. It is held annually and takes place on the Theresienwiese, a public place in the centre of Munich, Other cities have copied the Oktoberfest, and now they hold feasts that are similar to the Oktoberfest. The festival runs for sixteen days, from the end of September to the beginning of October. It is a big social event. There are lots of eating and drinking, especially beer. It ends on the first Sunday in October. If this is the first or the second, the festival is extended to end on 3 October, the Day of German Unitication. This is the day when East Germany and West Germany joined into one country again at the end of 1989.
The first Oktoberfest was on 12 October 1810 where the event was for the wedding of King Ludwig the 1st of Bavaria and Therese of Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The event lasted 5 days, and there were lots of drinking and eating. At the end, there was a big horse race. Next year they held the event again because people had liked it so much. It has now become a famous and popular tradition. More and more foreigners visit Germany every year to be a part of the festival. The foreigners primarily come from countries like Italy, the USA, Japan, Australia and neighbouring countries. In addition, the Oktoberfest has been the inspiration for many other folk festivals. For example, in Canada, they have a very similar event with around 700.000 attendants.
