Living in a parallel society is not always a bad thing – most likely a good thing. People know how to get a long, but it is not as easy as it looks. What if a Chinese family had to interact with an American family – what would it be like? We are all different, but that does not mean people are wrong. Well, some can be.
The story takes place somewhere in America, where we follow a Chinese family. The story takes place in modern time, around year of 2000.
A girl and her family immigrate from China to America. They get invited to their neighbor's house for their first American dinner. They realize American etiquette is much different from Chinese, so they do not know exactly how to react. Later on, they go to a fancy restaurant for dinner and the narrator is embarrassed by her family's obnoxious slurping. After that, the Lin family invites the Gleason's to their house for a Chinese dinner. The girl and Meg go for milkshakes that night, and after Meg gets asked if she always slurps, she just answers, "All Americans slurp!"
The narrator, which is a first-person narrator, is a Chinese girl, who has lived in America since she was nine years old. Her mom wants to stick to the Chinese heritage, but the narrator really wants to be as American as possible. She always shows off with her American accent, which she is really proud of, and talks about that her brother can speaker faster English, but her accent is way better.
