There are a lot of differences between Chinese and western upbringing. Many Westerners would say that the way Chinese people raise their kids is too manipulative and controlling. Thus, the term Tiger parents is used to describe this kind of parents, who raise their kids with very strict and some would even consider violent ways. The essay "Why Chinese mothers are superior" is written by Amy Chua, who is a lawyer and a professor at Yale University. She is also a Chinese American mother who has been considered a "Tiger Mom" for her ways of bringing her two daughters up, Sophia and Louisa. This essay focuses on Amy's views on the topic, her language and her daughter's response to the critique her mother received from writing this controversial article.

Amy Chua believes that her way of bringing up children is how the youngsters excel in everything they do. Chua brought up her two daughters by not making them watch TV, have playdates, be in a school play and many other basic things other parents may think of as normal. She thinks this is the right way because she was brought up the same way and she ended up becoming someone great and that if the child is strong mentally, he or she would be strong enough to take the criticism and improve from it. Even though a lot of her Western friends and people who read the article were so against her views, Chua still stood by her opinion by making a comparison of the Western upbringing and the Chinese upbringing. She even goes on to explain the results of her strict upbringing which always resulted in her children prevailing.
