Abstract
In this assignment I have written about welfare and inequality in Denmark. I have tried to find out if the inequality has increased during the Thorning-government. I have begun by giving an account of the Lorentz-curve and GINI coefficient followed by an account of the concepts social inequality and poverty. I have calculated GINI coefficients for Denmark and afterwards analyzed the results against the GINI coefficients given from a former period. I have concentrated on the following points, the financial crisis and the impact that the financial crisis had on the Danish society, in my analysis. Furthermore I have compared my findings with the different calculated GINI coefficients for a given period. Based on the theory that the social democratic government should make the GINI coefficients decrease, since the GINI coefficients increased during the liberal government, I have interpreted the variances of the GINI coefficients accordingly.
In connection with my analysis and interpretation I have discussed various potential solutions on how to reduce the income inequality. In my discussion I have questioned whether it would be desirable to balance out the income level resulting in a more equal income across the society.
