Every day states executes their citizens as punishment - also for actions that is not criminal.
The death penalty violates the right to live! Over 19.000 people are sitting on a death row across the world, waiting to be executed. The capital punishment is cruel and inhuman!
Capital punishment has a deterrent effect
Countries that executes their citizens often talk about the death penalty as a method of preventing people from committing crime. This claim has been refuted over and over, and there is no evidence that the death penalty has a greater deterrent than imprisonment.
The problem with capital punishment
People get killed every day. In some countries, you may be executed for your choice of partner, in others death penalty is for crimes such as murder and terrorism. Some countries execute minors and mentally ill people. Before the execution takes place, the prisoners have been in jail for many years. While they are sitting on death row, waiting for their punishment, they often do not know whether they will be allowed to see their family one last time, or not.
It is discriminating
Capital punishment is often used against people with certain ethnic and religious groups. It is also used as a political tool. Authorities in countries such as Iran or Sudan uses the death penalty to quite political opponents.
