All people have insecurities. However, insecurities can be different from person to person, some people feel anxious about their appearance, others feel insecure about a school project that must be presented before their classmates and teachers. In the non-fiction essay ‘’me talk pretty one day’’ written by David Sedaris in 2005 takes place in France in the capital Paris. We hear about David Sedaris’ experience in a French class he tokes in Paris to learn the language. His French teacher was unpleasant, she mocks them because they are terrible to French. In the French class, he develops an insecurity about himself thus he does not feel comfortable about speaking French to other people despite he had been determined that he would try his best at speaking French with locals.

The tone in the non-fiction essay is very informal and relaxed, which makes the essay more fascinating and recognizable for the reader. The relaxed tone in the essay is seen in everyday-like terms, like, ‘’ an easy ten-minute walk’’ (L.7) and ‘’ it’s everybody into the language pool, sink or swim.’’ (L.16). The everyday-like terms make it easier to identify with the writer, in this case David Sedaris, furthermore the causal tone does also keep the readers interest to read the whole essay. Additionally the tone is also made using figurative language and humor,’’ front teeth the size of tombstones’’ (L. 34). David Sedaris also maintains the causal tone with irony. He uses the irony then he writes words which does not have any meaning. For example, then his teacher speaks and the word he does not understand is written like gibberish. ‘’If you have not meismslsxp by this time, you should not be in this room. Has everybody apzkiubjxow?’’(L. 21-22). All this contributes to the informal tone in the non-fiction essay.
