At his first day in school he meets his teacher whom we quickly learn has a big attitude, with a sharp tongue. In the essay he describes how the teacher violently discriminates the students from his class. And how she rips him from all kind of confidence, and makes him stop talking French, in fear for saying something wrong, and get scolded by his teacher because of it.

In the essay, “Me Talk Pretty One Day” written by David Sedaris, we get introduced to al lot of people like the two polish girls both named Anna, and Carlos from argentine. And other fellow students of the narrator. But the characters most important in the story is the narrator, but also the teacher. the way the teacher is described to us, from the narrator's perspective, gives us an understanding of her being an mean teacher who frightens her own students into silent. you could say she is the bad guy (girl) of the story, which is a common style of writing. giving a story a bad person gives life and drama to it. whilst giving the main character a goal to overcome that person. like in the story when he in the end is able to almost talk back at her, understood as the good overcoming of the bad.
