Learning a new language can be very difficult, and even though you try your best, you might not succeed from the start. It can be even more challenging when you travel far to learn a language. The chances of feeling stupid is extremely high, and they get even higher when your teacher uses very ruthless and harsh teaching methods. The expectations and the reality comes to be very different from each other. But the curvy road often leads to success. The narrator of the short story “Me Talk Pretty One Day”, written by David Sedaris in 2005, experience these circumstances when he travels to France to learn the difficult language. He has signed up for a class filled with foreigners, all with the desire to learn French.
When the narrator arrives in France to learn French he feels very insecure, mostly the people around him is a lot younger than him, and he feels intimidated by their fluent French, but he is determent to learn the language, and has no problem asking for directions. He is exited to learn the language. His French teacher is a very harsh and strict teacher, and it feels like she does not care about her students and that she just wants the classes to end:
