When one are being handed a hard task or maybe even taken it itself, should they keep fighting at every cost? Me Talk Pretty One Day is a text written by David Sedaris in 2005. The text is built as a remembrance and is therefore written in past tense. In this we meet Sedaris, a forty-one year old man, who moves to France to learn French under authentic surroundings.

Me Talk Pretty One Day is built in a linear model, which means there is no flashbacks or flashforwards. The language in the text is very action-oriented due to the big amount of verbs used. The reader has to be careful about how much they trust Sedaris, the writer, as it is his own experiences he describes, which might led to him being subjective. The reader only hear the description of the teacher from Sedaris, which might be a problem because he wasn’t that good at French in the beginning, therefore he seemed quite lost in his class, without the teacher trying to make him catch up. This might have led to him making his own opinion on the teacher, different from his classmates. What’s also worth mentioning here is that he never describes the class as a unit by using words as “we”, but solely uses the word “I”. This backs up the point that he might not see himself as a part of the class culture nor share opinion with them. However due to Sedaris’s trenchancy and clearness in his memories his Ethos is pretty high.
