I really liked this poem because the poet managed to get around all the feelings that might be in play, when you are about to begin in school. I could relate to this poem on some points, because I was also nervous the first day. The boy he writes about is clearly very scared of his first day at school and therefore he creates imaginative thoughts about how school is like.
Beginning school is a big step. You are finally able to really learn and become more and more mature as the years go on. Learning is what life's all about so to begin this new “chapter” is a really big thing for a lot of kids. For some kids the first day at school is almost a nightmare.
My experience was much more relaxed and I was more excited than scared and nervous. I remember the days before school. I had been told that I would be in the same class as my kindergarten rival. This was the only thing I was really “concerned” about though. Otherwise I was stoked to meet new people, make new friends and learn all kinds of stuff.
Skipping to the actual day, I remember my Mom and Dad walking me into my first classroom. I didn’t notice it back then, but they were clearly very proud. Not because primary school is a big thing (since everyone has to attend it) but because I had grown “this big”.
