“Cookalein” is a graphic novel written by Will Eisner, and published in 1978. “Cookalein” is originally a part of the graphic novel “A Contract With God“ which contains four stories. All of the stories are about poor Jewish residents living in a tenement in the Bronx, New York. The stories can be read separately, but at the end they all fit together.
In the graphic novel we get to meet a lot of different characters. There is not one specific leading role, but a lot of different roles that play a huge part in the story.
The reader meets two unique plot lines. We meet a family with a father, mother and two sons. The father, Sam, wants to spend more time with his mistress, so he sends his family to a cookalien for the summer. We follow the oldest son, and see how he develops into becoming a man.
In the other plot line we meet Goldie and Benny, who both are from the lower-class. In the summer they visit the upper-class hotel, Grossman´s. They are both searching for social and financial advancement through marriage. Ironically they falsely believe that the other one is rich, and when they discover that both of their schemes are exactly alike, horrible things start to happen.
