Where is Billy (the main character) when the war is announced? How does the family react?

Bill is in the garden with his sister. The older sister seems happy and don’t really care while the adults just freeze and don’t say anything.

Why does his father tell him about the “googly”?

So the son always have a memory of him in case he doesn’t come back.

Why is Billy angry with his mother for being evacuated to the countryside?

He feels like she is giving them up.

Why are Billy and his sister not evacuated to Australia?

The mother can’t make herself let go of the children when Billy yells at him.

How does the mother react during the first bombardment, and what are the children’s reactions?

The mother doesn’t go out to the shelter just because it’s cold outside, meaning she doesn’t really see the danger in this. Dawn also makes a joke about a german soldier coming into the house. They go under the stairs and when the bombing starts she instinctively regret she didn’t go to the shelter.

Suddenly Dawn runs outside and dances next to the burning house and the others follow.

The headmaster of the school says: “It’s discipline that wins wars?” What is meant by that?
