I wake up to the harsh beeping of my alarm clock. It is indicating that it has just turned half past six in the morning. I smack it with the backside of my hand and go back to sleep. “RING RING” “RING RING”. My phone rings away. Oh, fuck what is the time? I look at the alarm clock, that I apparently turned off four hours ago! How could I let this happen? Before the biggest interview of my life! I stand up, face the door of my bedroom wearing nothing but my undies and march towards the phone, hanging on the wall. I try to clear my head for a second, but the sound of my loud ringing phone keeps interrupting me. I take a deep breath, and pick up. “Hello this is Lewis Samuel Linton”. I say. “Where the bloody hell are you Lew”? It is Frank on the other end. He is the one that got me todays interview for the best law agency in town. He is also going to be there at my interview, which is in half an hour. “I am surging towards you as we speak. My sincerest apologies my friend, there is a massive traffic jam this side of London. Anyway, got to go”! I hang up and think to myself, how should I handle this situation? I would do well to try and keep calm, gather my things quickly and leave. I look back to my bedside table, at my alarm clock, only to remember that the interview starts in 20 minutes. I sprint to my closet and grab my cleanest suit, I throw it on in an instant and then slap a tie around my collar. Find my only pair of black shoes and give them a quick scrub before putting them on. I run downstairs, put my cigarettes, my wallet and my keys in my suit pockets. Then I grab my coat and my newly made sleek black leather briefcase with my initials on it. Then I run out of my front door, slamming it behind me and hop in my tin bucket of a car. I frantically drive towards the centre of London, going slalom in all the lanes. After about 15 minutes I seem to be making progress. I am on the M45 going into London and I feel as though nobody can stop me. Just as I begin to think that I just might be able to make it in time. I see the worst possible thing in front of me. Not a car accident, not a nuclear bomb, but an old couple. I see them through the back window of their car. The woman is riding shotgun in the passenger seat, knitting a scarf, probably for her spectacular beloved grandkids. The man is sitting in front at the wheel, wearing glasses and leaning so far forward that his nose is almost touching the windshield. I drive behind them, unable to get past for a good part of the next 20 minutes. At long last I have had enough, and honk at them, five loud times. Just as I overtake them, I see the building where my interview is being held. I park my car illegally, and get out. Only to see Frank standing there waiting for me. He says: “I am sorry my friend, you were too late and they gave the position to someone else”. I grow numb, that job was my last chance. I cross the street and just lie down. I light a cigarette and see a bus drive by.
