I have gotten the opportunity to meet a previous winner of the award ‘Young person of the year’, Joel Davis, born 1995, from Islington, London.
Joel was nominated for his tutoring service, where more than 170 children get help with their homework. Today, I am visiting him at one of his tutoring facilities to interview him.
What was the reason for starting your tutoring service?
‘Growing up I struggled a lot with reading at school, and my family couldn’t afford to get me a tutor. My mother was very sick and her medication was quite expensive. She didn’t have a lot of energy and I had to help her a lot around the home. All in all, this meant that I had to work extremely hard and without any help to achieve good grades. I didn’t want anyone else to feel neglected in their education.’
How did you start your tutoring service?
‘I was studying at university when I first started tutoring. I offered to start a study group for grade-schoolers a local library, and I got permission. At the beginning, not that many pupils showed up, but after a couple of months there were too many for me to handle by myself, and I couple of classmates joined me as tutors. Then it just continued from that.’
