Most people can agree on the fact that Shakespeare’s works are timeless. For four hundred years, people have read, studied and played his plays and poetry – but why exactly? This is the question that the two texts try to answer. The first text is called Why do we still read Shakespeare? and is published on Yahoo. In this text, the writer, who is just called Lucy, discussed whether or not Shakespeare is still relevant in our society. Lucy thinks that there is no doubt about the fact that Shakespeare’s many works are still very much relevant in today’s society. She substantiates this claim by writing that great books are like mirrors – and that especially Shakespeare’s work could reflect both the world around us and ourselves.
Lucy writes – among other things – that a lot of people think that Shakespeare’s work is difficult to understand. Even though she acknowledges this fact, she insists that you should read it nonetheless: “They did not expect readers to understand Shakespeare’s works the first time they read them – and that’s why they recommend rereading – “again and again.” They recognize that Shakespeare is difficult, but they insist that he is worth the effort – and that if someone doesn’t like Shakespeare, it’s their fault, not his.”. In this quote, the reader also sees what characterizes Lucy’s way of arguing.
