William Shakespeare as a poet, dramatist, and actor, is considered by many to be the greatest English writer and dramatist of all time. Though he lived more than 400 years ago, his plays are still performed and loved throughout the world and in many languages. Some of Shakespeare’s plays, are among the most famous literary works in the world.

William Shakespeare is believed to have been born in April 1564 at Stratford-upon-Avon in a house on Henley Street. There is no record of his birth, but his baptism was recorded by the church, thus his birthday is assumed to be April 23rd. The baptismal register of the Holy Trinity parish church, in Stratford, shows the following entry for April 26th. 1564: “Gulielmus filius Johannes Shakespeare”. The actual date of Shakespeare’s birth is not known, but, traditionally, April 23rd. St George’s Day, has been Shakespeare’s accepted birthday.

Shakespeare's Birthplace

Shakespeare’s mother was Mary Arden, one of the daughters of Robert Arden, a farmer from the nearby village of Wilmcote. Shakespeare’s father, John Shakespeare, trained as a glove-maker, was a prominent citizen, serving on the town council for many years before becoming Bailiff, as was the title of their times equivalent of Mayor, in 1568. Besides John Shakespeare’s craft as a glover, he traded as a wool dealer and was also involved in money-lending. John and Mary settled down in Henley Street, Stratford, in the house now known as Shakespeare’s Birthplace. John and Mary lost two children before William was born. They had five more children, one of which died young.
