Task A – Summary

The news segment in the video is a discussion about whether or not violent video games cause crime. The segment stems from a statement from The New South Wales Police Commision who believes that young people are beeing ”desensitized” to violence because of video games. In order to find out if there’s a connection between the two, a psychiatrist and an oline campaigner are brought in. The problem with the notion that violence in video games cause crime is that there are no studies definitively concluding whether or not that statement is correct. The female anchor (stupidly) points out that Anders Breivick—and a shooter from Colorado—played a lot of violent video games. Dr. AZ (the psychiatrist) then makes the point that how people recieve violence in video games is very individual. It is stated that childen who are by nature more violent and more prone to antisocial behavior tend to not necessarily be more violent, but tend to express violence when subjected to it. Also the subject has been researched for over 30 years—with conflicting results. In 2010 the Australian government summarized all research done in the field and vaguely concluded no, but mentioned all the conflicting conclusions from studies saying that it’s not the level of violence but the amount of time spent and studies saying that violence in video games has no effect.
