The opening scene in Into the wild starts off with a black screen with a text that says” there is a pleasure in the pathless woods…” ending with” I love not man the less, but nature more”, from just these very few words at the beginning, we could imagine that this movie has some kind of relation to nature, and our conception gets confirmed when we see the main character go into the nature.
We then see a picture of a man, with non-diegetic sounds in the background, a voice saying” mom! Mom! Help me”, and slow music playing, with the music and the voice over of a man needing help. Afterwards a woman wakes up from her sleep saying “I wasn’t dreaming Walt. I didn’t imagine it”. Assuming it is the mother of the man saying he needed help, we get an idea of what the genre might be, judging only from the very first minute of the movie, this might be a drama, because of the way it is built.
We don’t get too much information about the main character, he has dark brown hair, dark eyes, in his late-twenties. He seems decent, because he thanks the guy that gave him a ride more than once. Also he seems to be very practical, he has a huge backpack packed, he put a tent up with no problems, and he even knows how to hunt. He went to Alaska, which is one of the best hunting states in the US therefore he might have done some research on how to survive or tried it before.
