Chris is an adventures guy, who dreams about traveling into the wild and exploring the world without any help. Chris shows from an early age deep strength and passion to do everything on his own. He thought that society was a bad influence and that material things such as money or possessions were evil things that he should stay away from and that’s why he left his comfortable life. Chris loved his family, even though he did not get along with his father very well. Chris went through his life mostly alone, he had people that he spent some time with, but for the most part he traveled solo. He needed to be alone to thrive, especially when he was in nature. He tried as hard as he could to distance himself from the limits that he thought society placed on people's lives.

While he’s on his journey he experience and sees a lot of wild things he has never seen before. He also meets a few people. At one point in the movie Chris decides to kill a moose, which ends up being a bad idea. He tries to smoke the meat, but it doesn’t go as he wanted. He spends days trying to cure its meet so he can consume every part of the moose. But he preserves the meet incorrectly with the result that it becomes infested with vermin and therefore it’s not edible. Chris must leave the moose carcass for the wolves, which leaves him feeling deeply guilty and disappointed because he couldn’t preserve the meet successfully.
