South Africa: Poor Whites, Rich Blacks

In the film, we meet two families from South Africa, but (jeg ville nok bare skrive and) they have two very different realities. We meet a black family who has had very much success after the end of apartheid (med stort A). They are the very first shoe designers in South Africa, and it looks as though they have made quite a lot of money as a result of that. They have a very nice house inspired by the French king louis (stort forbogstav) 15. and they have what looks to be pretty expensive furniture. They took the opportunities they got, even though it was hard, and made something of themselves that no one thought they could. They were taught to have a standard job and not to be something special. You can say that they started from the very bottom. Now they are laying a foundation for their son, so that he doesn’t have to start all over like they did. They expect him to be something out of the ordinary like themselves, and they expect him to do well for himself in South Africa.

The other family we meet is a broke white family. Since the end of apartheid, everything has just fallen apart. The man in the family has struggled to get a job and to get his family a place to live. Then he was offered a job by Mr. Smit (er det Smit uden H?) who offers jobs to struggling white families and gives them a place to live. The house is only just livable. The walls look to be falling apart and it looks to be very filthy and disgusting, but it is a place for them to live. The man says that everything was way better under apartheid but not that it was a fair system. In his opinion, it is just the opposite of what it was under apartheid; now it is the whites that struggles (who struggle) and not the blacks. If it becomes a possibility for him to move to a better place he will do it, because he sees no future for his children in South Africa.
