The History of South Africa

Overall

Before either Black or White people arrived in South Africa there were small tribes called the Khoi and the San. There are very few of them left, due to Racism, disease and business. Mostly they live in Botswana in the Kalahari desert. You can find some wonderful cave-paintings from them in South Africa. By the 14th century black tribes were moving south from Central Africa. They didn’t look like the black Africans we know today. They were short with a yellowish skin. They lived apart from each other. Both kept moving about the land, looking for animals to hunt and for grassland for the cattle. Many Pictures also show how important it was to dance. Dancing made a Khoi or a San tribe feel like a family and wild dancing brought them close to the spirits of the ancestors. Today, only a few of the San have survived. All the Khoi have died. The black Africans came down from Central Africa about 2000 years ago. They came in large groups. They were farmers and they knew how to make tool and weapons from iron. They were much stronger than the Khoi and the San. In 1652 it got much worse. The Europeans came and they were even stronger than the black Africans. They took the Khoi and the San people as slaves. Some womens were married off to Europenas. Those Khoi and San who were not turned into slaves or married off were hunted down og shot like wild animals.
