When F.W. de Klerk became President in 1989, he made great changes. Banned organisations, including the African National Congress (ANC), were 40 legalized again. Hundreds of political prisoners were released, among them Nelson Mandela. There were negotiations between the government and the ANC. There would be a one-person-one-vote election on April 27th 1994.
