The film “American Beauty” pictures the taboos, the superficial characters and the endless problems, we are confronted with every day through our entire lives. It is a cry out to all of us. Us who make it through these trivial, monotonous, repetitive days, without giving thought about, if this really could be the best way to spend the only life, we have been given.
We are introduced to a great deal of characters, and each of them has one or several disadvantages, which is linked to the taboos, we normally avoid to be confronted with. The characters, we survey through “American Beauty”, each develop themselves and get in touch with different feelings.
We meet Lester Burnham, the main character, a well dressed man living in a nice suburban neighbourhood along with his wife, Carolyn, and his daughter, Jane. Lester has no spine in the beginning. He flows on a current of other peoples opinions. He sails without navigation or oars. The direction of the stream is especially influenced by his wife, Carolyn, and his boss, Brad. We seen an excellent example of that in the shooting script, where Lester avoids an argument with Carolyn just by saying: “I’m gonna get some icecream.”, and then he leaves the living room. When Brad asks Lester, if he has got a minute Lester answers very wheedling: “For you, Brad? I’ve got five.”
