The next morning Sam and the four others had a plan, a plan for getting away. They didn’t know where to go, but Toni had a driver’s license, and Sam’s dad had two cars, so he could easily take one of them. Toni slept over at Sam’s, so Sam could tell his dad that Toni could drive them to school. His dad wasn’t too happy about letting a teen drive his car. But because he trusted his son, he said yes, with one condition. The condition was that Sam had to call his dad when they arrived at school. Toni called her mom, to ask for some lunch money. So first the two of them drove over to Toni’s. Then they drove over to Kim, she was standing outside her house, with her schoolbag. Then they picked up Bob. Bob wasn’t ready as always. He was always late.
While they waited for Bob, they talked about where they should go. Kim asked if they could go to New York. But Sam talked it down right away. He told her it took for long. And he needed to be back for tonight, with his dad’s car. Toni rolled her eyes and said. That she thought they should see what freedom was, and freedom in Toni’s eyes, wasn’t coming home until a certain time. It was doing what you want whenever you wanted it. Then the destination was planned, a road trip to New York.
