There are many things in life which affect the social mobility in the US. People are desperate about finding a job and earn money to provide for their families and themselves, so the people they care about have a good chance to get through life with a useful education and without many complications. But not everybody is capable of getting a job and earn enough money to live a happy life. Many families are being left off with no money, which isn’t easy. You don’t have many rights and opportunities to get to the top of the mountain, which often leads to serious problems in many families. Some of these problems are clearly underlined in the book Push, written in 1996 by Romana Loften, better known as Sapphire, who is an American author and performance poet. This book is a perfect example of, what it’s like to be black in the lower class in the US. The book portraits the 18-year-old African American teenager, Claireece Precious Jones, who lives in Harlem with her mother. She gets abused by her own father and is pregnant for the second time with her father’s baby. After the second pregnancy, her father left, and now Precious is stuck with her mother, who is mistreating her. Precious never learned to spell or read, and when she got pregnant for the second time, she got kicked out of school. She doesn’t have any friends, but when she got introduced to an alternative school, many things in her life changed. Together with other girls with some sort of problem, she learns to spell and read by the teacher, Ms Rain, so she can get a G.E.D. Precious starts to feel happiness when she is among the people at the alternative school, but her life still turns down the second she steps into her house where her mother is stuck all day, so when she gives birth to her second baby, Abdul, she decides to leave home to start her own life, but a number of complications shows up, before she successfully gets her own life.
