What is the election? You may know what it is so I will keep it short. The election is where an American citizen over the age of 18 can vote. But that is only the voting process, the Election actually begins when they have to find the different candidates. In the election the American citizens don’t vote directly on the candidate, like we do here in Denmark, but they vote on the Electoral college who then vote, but I will get back to that. Here in Denmark we have almost the same system as USA but not quite. We have some other, and in some ways better rules, Don’t get me wrong our system isn’t perfect but in many ways it is better than USA’s. In USA the majority gets all of the electoral votes even if they only win by 1 % which means that 49% can get lost, that is called “the winner takes it all”.
What is the winner takes it all? The winner takes it all is a system where the majority get all of the electoral votes as I mentioned before. That means that many of the votes actually get lost and doesn’t really have any influence at all. So if you are a democrat in Texas, a red state, then you are out of luck, the same goes for a republican in California, a blue state. Your vote doesn’t count because the minority is wiped out. As a result of that the Swing states gets almost all of the attention because the candidates don’t pay attention to the states where they expect to either win or lose.
