The language in the short story is English, so therefore the setting must be somewhere in England. Most of the story takes place at an old mans bedroom. The point of view is 1. person.

The narrator is a grown man, who works for an old man, whom he wants to kill. He takes precautions, does everything he can not to make a single noise and moves very slowly, when opening the door to the old mans bedroom: “A watch’s minute hand moves more quickly than did mine.”

He likes the old man and is very kind to him, but there is just one thing that he can not deal with: “The evil eye”. The so called “evil eye” is one of the old mans eyes. It is pale and blue and has a film over it.

In the old days, where people were very superstitious, they thought that people could have a so called “evil eye” which could cast a spell upon you. It could for example make you ill or make you do things that you usually would not do. It would haunt you. This is exactly what the narrator thinks about the old mans evil eye. He says that it haunts him and that it is what made him kill the old man: “It is impossible to say how first the idea entered my brain, but, once conceived, it haunted me day and night.”
