Slavery and racism have had a huge impact on society in the early days and the day today. Through time we got past the colonialism and fought through racism. Or maybe not? Many people traveled around the world to find a safe place with peace where they could settle down and build a good and full life. The article “I’m More Than An ‘Other’” from the French women’s magazine ELLE by Meghan Markle shows her fight with her ethnic background. Meghan Markle is an American actress who in 2018 married the English Prince Harry and became Duchess of Sussex. In the article, we get an inside into her life as a half-caste with an American father and an African-American mother. Through her childhood, she had difficulty defining her own identity in a world with realism and discord.

To upon the topic of realism and race differences ELLE magazine published the article “I’m More Than An ‘Other’” by Meghan Markle. With the article Markle want to discuss the biggest question, “who and what are you”. Meghan Markle is both white and black, and she is not embarrassed about it. Nevertheless, it came very close then ELLE magazine asked about her parents and their fight to happiness and acceptance. In the article, she tells that her dad is Caucasian and her mother American-American. Through her childhood, people sometimes did not really see that she was half white and half black. People came to her mom and thought that her mom was her nanny. “And there was my mom, caramel in complexion with her light-skinned baby in tow, being asked where my mother was since they assumed, she was the nanny” (p. 7 ll. 51-56). This really shows the way we in society see American-Americans. They are looked down on as the low class of society with no ambitious jobs with good pay. For some people, they can only be working as nanny’s or servants. Her parents met in the seventies there her father was a lighting director at a soap opera studio where her mother also worked as a temp.
